Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. 

Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)

FIRE238L: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

This course covers all emergency medical techniques required of the Emergency Medical Technician at the Advanced level in the provision of emergency care with an ambulance/fire service. Successful completion of the course allows the student to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Technicians’ Advanced level written and practical examination.

Approval of department chair for non-Fire Science students. NR-EMT, Department Affiliation or Liability Coverage, Vaccinations, Criminal Background check, ICS, NIMS, HAZMAT, CPR and approval of instructor.

Students will complete each course with several certifications, and will have the knowledge base to sit for the national Registry of EMT exam.  The certifications they’ll get are:  National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command Systems (ICS), and Hazardous Materials Awareness.
